The story follows Hazel ("The Descendants" co-star Shailene Woodley) a sixteen-year-old cancer patient, who is forced by her parents to attend a support group. She soon meets and falls in love with seventeen-year-old Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort), an ex-basketball player and leg amputee.
Dern would play Hazel's mom. Nat Wolff has won the pivotal role of Isaac-a close friend of Augustus who is responsible for bringing him to the teenage cancer support group where Augustus and Hazel first meet
Filmmaker Josh Boone, whose film Stuck In Love made a splash at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, has the job of directing the film. Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber wrote the adapted screenplay.
Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey will produce the pic.
Production hopes to start next month in Pittsburgh.
In "Divergent" Woodley and Elgort play siblings--Production is underway in Chicago on that film and it's slated for release on March 21, 2014.
