The Midnight Meat Train writer Jeff Buhler was hired recently to pen a script for the upcoming reboot of The Grudge franchise.
Takashi Shimizu helmed both the original Japanese "Ju-On" and its 2004 Hollywood remake starring Sarah Michelle Gellar which made $187 million worldwide from a $10 million budget.
Gellar
played an American nurse working in Tokyo, who is exposed to a
dangerous supernatural curse that locks the victim into a powerful rage.
Two further sequels were made in 2006 and 2009, which was a direct-to-video release.
Sam Raimi, who produced the first remake, will also produce this reboot with Rob Tapert and Takashige Ichise.
No production schedule has been announced yet.
Chatting with FEARnet Buhler says that this is a full-on reboot that will essentially ignore the previous films:
"We're not approaching this as a remake of the Sarah Michelle Gellar film or a remake of the 'Ju-on' film. This is pushing the mythology forward while keeping the concepts and spirit of those movies, yet finding a new way to tell a story within that world, which is exciting."
He adds that there are "new characters, new ghost, and a new mythology. We are still in the scripting process [and it's] very early in the process."
