Talking with Total Film (via Digital Spy) about the upcoming Godzilla reboot, star Aaron Taylor-Johnson says director Gareth Edwards is trying to film the movie practically as much as possible:
"The Godzilla crew is such a small group of people that it feels more like an independent movie than anything I've ever worked on. I've hardly done any green screen stuff for it, he's [Edwards] really clever at doing the special effects. We'll shoot everything raw on location, on the streets, and he's going to put it all around us."
He also talked about his training for the role:
"There's an etiquette for guys in the military, so there was training for that, how to hold guns and how to run and to talk to other officers. I love all that."
Johnson will play the lead. Juliette Binoche Elizabeth Olsen, David Strathairn Ken Watanabe Sally Hawkins Yuki Morita and Bryan Cranston also star Character deets are being kept under wraps. Akira Takarada, who made his acting debut in the very first Godzilla film as diver Hideto Ogata has shot a cameo.
David Callahan, David Goyer Drew Pearce and Max Borenstein have all worked on previous drafts of the screenplay.-"The Shawshank Redemption" director Frank Darabont wrote the final draft of the script
The film has been in the pipeline for several years, but picked up steam recently - after a proof of concept trailer screened twice during Comic-Con 2012 and got great reaction. The project will "return the character to its epic roots with a gritty, realistic actioner".
In a chat with io9, in January Darabont said that both he and director Edwards' goal is to deliver a much more grounded interpretation, one much like the original 1954 film.
Goyer, Borenstein, Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce.
Roy Lee, Dan Lin Brian Rogers. Alex Garcia Patricia Whitcher Doug Davison, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira will serve as executive producers.
The film will get a 3-D release, but it's unclear if it is being shot that way or converted in post production. Principal photography on the movie due out May 16, 2014, is underway
