Avatar wins first place for yet another weekend--even with one more day to go--as we commemorate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. in the US on Monday...And The Lovely Bones does well going wide....

Pamela McClintock of Variety:

Twentieth Century Fox's "Avatar" neared the $500 million mark at the domestic B.O. over the weekend to stay No. 1., but strong business was also enjoyed by Warner Bros.' "The Book of Eli" and Paramount's "The Lovely Bones."

"Avatar" grossed an estimated $41.3 million for the three-day Martin Luther King Jr. weekend for a total haul of $491.8.

Overseas, "Avatar's" continued run was equally as impressive. Film grossed another $125 million for a foreign cume of $1.11 billion and massive worldwide total of $1.6 billion -- only $200 milllion shy of the $1.8 billion cumed by "Titanic," the top grosser of all time.

Denzel Washington topliner "Book of Eli," financed and produced by Alcon Entertainment, opened to an estimated $31.6 million from 3,111 theaters. Joel Silver's Silver Pictures produced with Alcon.

Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones" was the surprise victory of the weekend as it expanded nationwide, since the film had struggled initially in a limited run. But Par was able to retool its marketing campaign to target younger femmes.

"Lovely Bones" grossed an estimated $17 million from 2,563 runs for the three-day weekend. Par estimates that the pic will gross $20 million through Monday.

Lionsgate's kiddie pic "The Spy Next Door" opened to a so-so $9.7 million, unable to best Fox holdover "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," which grossed $11.5 million for a cume of $192.6 million in its fourth frame...
