"Spring Breakers" Gets A Sorta Sequel

Screen reports that Wild Bunch has announced its slate of new films being sold at this year's Cannes Film Festival--one caught everyone by surprise- "Spring Breakers: The Second Coming".

The original film from Harmony Korine followed four college girls (Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez and Rachel Korine) who rob a fast food restaurant to afford spring break in Florida. Upon arrival, they get mixed up with a shady criminal (James Franco) who entices them to kill his arch-rival.

This follow up sees the girls do battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them.

Wild Bunch says it's NOT a direct sequel, but "there are allusions to some of the characters in the original". The cast is expected to be a mix of both familiar and new characters.

"Trainspotting" and "Filth" author Irvine Welsh has reportedly written the screenplay.

Spun and Small Apartments director Jonas Akerlund will call action.
