The specialty box office roared to life as Lionsgate’s “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” opened to $1.8 million from 18 locations for a record-breaking $100,000 per location average.
Among new wide releases, however, the results were mixed. Robert Zemeckis’ 3D holiday pic “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” came in on the lower end of expectations in grossing $31 million from 3,683 locations. The Jim Carrey topliner still easily claimed the No. 1 spot at the domestic B.O, but had expected to be more of a draw because of being a family title.
Sony holdover “This Is It” came in ahead of the three other new wide entries, dipping 40% in its second frame to $14 million from 3,481 runs for a domestic total of $57.9 million. Pic has earned north of $100 million overseas, and that’s before weekend numbers.
In another score for Overture Films’ George Clooney farce “The Men Who Stare at Goats” opened to $13.3 million from 2,443 to come in No. 3 for the sesh.
Universal and Gold Circle Films’ sci-fi thriller “The Fourth Kind,” which placed No. 4 in debuting to a solid $12.5 million from 2,527 screens.
Paramount holdover “Paranormal Activity” stayed strong in its seventh frame, placing No. 5 with $8.6 million from 2,558 runs for a domestic cume of $97.4 million.
Warner Bros.’ Cameron Diaz-James Marsden horror pic “The Box”--the fourth new wide entry of the weekend--wasn’t able to crack the $10 million mark, grossing $7.9 million from 2,635 theaters...
