The normally sluggish January box office came alive as 20th Century Fox's "Avatar" remained a powerhouse, grossing an estimated $48.5 million domestically and another $143 million overseas for a worldwide cume of $1.34 billion in only its fourth frame.
Warner Bros.' "Sherlock Holmes" and Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" stayed at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, at the domestic B.O.
"Sherlock" grossed an estimated $16.6 million for a cume of $165.2 million in its third sesh.
"Squeakquel" grossed an estimated $16.3 domestically for a cume of $178.2 million. Overseas, the sequel grossed an estimated $22 million for a global total of $314.4 million in its third weekend.
Among the three newcomers domestically, only Lionsgate's horror-actioner "Daybreakers" enjoyed strong business, grossing an estimated $15 million from 2,523 theaters to come in No. 4.
Universal's romantic comedy "Leap Year" opened to a soft $9.2 million from 2,511 runs to place No. 6, behind U's other femme-skewing pic, "It's Complicated."
Dimension Films/Weinstein Co.'s Michael Cera comedy "Youth in Revolt" debuted to $7 million from 1,873 runs to place No. 9 for the weekend.
Led by James Cameron's "Avatar," frame brought in record revenues at the domestic B.O. for the first official weekend of January (New Year's weekend grosses are included in the prior year's count).
"Avatar" is the No. 2 film of all time worldwide after Cameron's "Titanic" ($1.8 billion).
