Director Kenneth Branagh has replaced him with little known American actor Joshua Dallas to play Fandral, one of the Warriors Three.
Dallas will be seen in the George Lucas-inspired pic Red Tails though
History is repeating itself as a decade ago Townsend left production on Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy in which he was to play Aragorn. He was replaced by Viggo Mortensen.
The cast change comes as production begins today. The film is due to be released on May 6, 2011.
