Bryan Bertino wrote and directed the film and will pen the sequel script, but it's not clear whether he'll helm the sequel.
The original film cost just $9 million and even with very mixed reviews took in over $54 million here in the US.
The film followed a couple terrorised in their remote house by three masked intruders.
Liv Tyler and several of the original villains will return in the project with filming targeted to begin early next year.
Bertino is also attached to direct the thrillers "Black" and "Alone".
Despite having 2 other projects lined up I would be surprised Bertino didn't direct the 2nd flick...
Meanwhile, The Strangers will be available on both DVD and Blu-ray, October 21, 2008.
