Friday became a cult hero for working-class fans as an icon who refused to take life seriously and who lived every moment as if it were his last. He retired in 1977 and died in 1990 at the age of 38.
Julian Stone and Paolo Hewitt adapted the script for the film, from the 1997 biography by former Oasis band member Paul McGuigan.
"SuperTed" creator Mike Young will produce the film.
