Maguire's Been Cut From Lee's Pi

Tobey Maguire's small but key part has been recast in Ang Lee's nearly completed Life Of Pi says THR.

A 3-D adaptation of Yann Martel's beloved novel is about a boy stranded on a boat with a tiger, hyena, zebra and orangutan for 227 days after a shipwreck

Maguire's role was that of a reporter who interviews the grown-up Pi (Irrfan Khan) Film newcomer Suraj Sharma plays the boyhood incarnation. Gerard Depardieu, Adil Hussain and Bollywood actress Tabu, who will play Pi's mother also star.

It seems that Maguire’s presence was jarring enough that Lee has reshot the scenes with a lesser known actor - Prometheus star Rafe Spall was hired to replace Maguire.

Lee said, "To be consistent with the other casting choices made for the film, I decided to go with an entirely international cast. I very much admire Tobey, and look forward to working with him again in the future."

Maguire also issued a statement, "I fully support Ang's decision to go a different direction for this role in Life of Pi. Ang shared a lot of the film with me, and what I saw was absolutely beautiful."

Tobey and Ang did Ride With The Devil and The Ice Storm together

Lee is working from a script adapted by David Magee.

Gil Netter and David Womark will produce the film

It is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Dec. 14, 2012.
