Keep On Trekin'!

News broke this week via Variety that Paramount is already planning a sequel for the upcoming reboot of "Star Trek".

Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have been hired to write the screenplay and produce the sequel the trade says. They're goal is to pen the script over the next few months and deliver it to the studio by the end of '09-- for a Summer 2011 release.

Producer/director J.J. Abrams will be back as producer, but it is unclear as to whether he will direct the sequel as well. Abrams had only intended to produce the first film but signed on to direct after reading Kurtzman and Orci's script.

My opinion There's a better than 50/50 chance Abrams will boldly go on to helm the next flick...

There's obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn't even come out yet," Lindelof told Variety. "But we're so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed."

Story lines ?

"Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month. With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do" says Kurtzman.

Let the rumours begin-William Shatner to Appear in Star Trek XII?

I can see it now--Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Shatner...

The move is both surprising yet very much expected. The new film's garnered lots of good buzz for months after years of the franchise being off the radar--why waste momentum?

The budget for the reboot was more than any of the previous films and so that the film will have to perform significantly better than usual in both domestic and foreign markets to warrant sequels.

I just thought they would have waited until reaction from the first major screening which occurs this Tuesday at the Sydney Opera House for the world premiere--before making any official future plans public--Confidence is high indeed.

Press reviews for the film are under an embargo until late April...I still expect some sort of leakage though--this is the Internet, after all...Look what happened with X-Men Origins Wolverine...20th Century Fox Condemns Roger Friedman's Early Wolverine Review--Still co-star Ryan Reynolds says 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' will be 'huge!'

Yeah untill Trek arrives a week later....

Feel free to come and ask some questions which we can pose to JJ, Alex and some of the cast by using Twitter and including the code '#asktrek' in the post.

Or come over to our special channel on 'Phreadz' at http://startrek.phreadz.com where we will be covering the action live (and 'almost' live) from the red carpet and events around the premiere from here in Sydney! :)
