Simon West may direct a reinvention of Michael Winner's classic 1972 action thriller "The Mechanic," reports Production Weekly.
Action guy Jason Statham is poised to take on the lead role in the film which turns the property intia spy flick set in modern times--as per Shane Salerno script.
In the original, Charles Bronson plays a gifted hit man who takes on an apprentice (Jan-Michael Vincent) and teaches him everything he knows before getting ready to retire. Eventually it becomes clear that someone has betrayed them.
West, whose credits include "Con Air," "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" should be able to do this one with his eyes shut---Statham built his career on stuff like this. But do we really need another spy thriller right now?
Look for the update next year....
