Land-ing With A Thud!

UP may be the number one film in the U.S. for the second weekend...

But it's The Hangover that really sizzles; While Land of the Lost fizzles..proving that Will Ferrell doesn't always mean box office gold...

Pamela McClintock of Variety:

Warner Bros.' R-rated comedy "The Hangover" grossed a boffo $43.3 million in its debut, although Disney-Pixar holdover "Up" remained No. 1 at the domestic box office at $44.2 million.

Weekend also brought the summer's first B.O. clunker, Universal's big-budget laffer "Land of the Lost." The Will Ferrell starrer grossed $19.5 million from 3,521 theaters, well below the $30 million the studio had hoped for.

Heading into the weekend, Todd Phillips' "Hangover" was projected to open in the low to mid-$20s. Film's ability to roar past those projections and come close to beating "Up" underscores the healthy appetite for comedies.

Pic, which is co-produced and co-financed by Legendary Pictures, secured the third best opening ever for an R-rated laffer playing in 3,269 theaters.

"Up's" dazzling performance in its second run brought the 3-D toon's domestic cume to $137.3 million in its first 10 days. Playing over the weekend in 3,818 runs, pic dropped a mere 35%, cementing the added boost 3-D runs can bring.

Frame's other new wide entry was rom com "My Life in Ruins," produced by Fox Searchlight and distributed by big Fox. Film grossed a meek $3.2 million from 1,164 runs to place only No. 9 for the sesh. Per location average was $2,771.

Focus Features had much better luck with Sam Mendes' dramedy "Away We Go." Film grossed an estimated $143,260 from four runs in New York and L.A. for a per location average of $35,815...

Adam B. Vary of EW:

'Up' squeaks past 'The Hangover' for a photo-finish win

And...After 5 weeks: Star Trek is still in the Top 5--with a domestic gross of $222.8M so far!
